This is the case in the first person plural of the preterite indicative (or passé simple), which adds a circumflex by association with the second person plural, thus: Latin cantavistis → OF chantastes → chantâtes (after the muting of the interposing /s/) Latin cantavimus → OF chantames → chantâmes (by interference with chantâtes).

D'autre part, à la première personne du pluriel du passé simple de l'indicatif, l'accent circonflexe n'a été ajouté que par analogie avec celui, motivé, de la deuxième personne du pluriel : latin cantavistis → ancien français chantastes → chantâtes (après amuïssement du /s/ appuyant) ; latin cantavimus → ancien français chantames → chantâmes (par contamination avec chantâtes).
