সমবায় সংস্থাটির মূলত গ্যারি নাইট ও জন স্ট্যানমিয়ারের চিন্তা থেকে তৈরি। পরবর্তীতে তারা আলেকজান্ডার বাউলট, রন হ্যাভিভ, আন্তোনিন ক্রাটোচভিল, ক্রিস্টোফার মরিস এবং জেমস নাচতভি এবং সংস্থা আরো কিছু সংখ্যক সদস্য সংগ্রহের মাধ্যমে ২০০১ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে ফ্রান্সের পার্পিগিনে উৎসবের মাধ্যমে এর যাত্রা শুরু হয়। সপ্তম ফটো এজেন্সি বড় কর্পোরেশনগুলিতে ফটোগ্রাফারদে মালিকানাধীন এবং নিয়ন্ত্রিত ডিজিটাল চিত্র বিতরণের ক্ষেত্রে প্রতিনিধিত্ব করে। এ সংস্থার সদস্যদের মধ্যে থেকে ১৯ জন ফটোগ্রাফারক উল্লেখযোগ্য বিশ্বব্যাপি বিভিন্ন ইভেন্টে ছবি প্রদর্শন করেছে।

The cooperative agency was originally conceived by Gary Knight and John Stanmeyer. They were subsequently joined by Alexandra Boulat, Ron Haviv, Antonin Kratochvil, Christopher Morris, and James Nachtwey and the agency, named after the number of founding members, was launched at the Visa pour l'image Festival in Perpignan, France, in September, 2001. VII was conceived to operate as a means of digital image distribution and representation wholly owned and controlled by the photographers it represented in response to large corporations acquiring the small photo agencies present in the industry at the time. Today, VII represents 19 photographers who have chronicled significant global events and topics since the late 1970s.
