Der Austausch des Zeichens des Friedens und der Versöhnung, im römischen Ritus bezeichnenderweise vor der Kommunionausteilung vorgesehen, ist eine besonders ausdrucksvolle Geste, zu deren Durchführung die Gläubigen eingeladen werden: als Zeichen der Zustimmung des Gottesvolkes zu allem, was in der Meßfeier vollzogen worden ist,(74) und der Verpflichtung zu gegenseitiger Liebe, die in Erinnerung an das anspruchsvolle Wort Christi durch die Teilnahme an dem einen Brot übernommen wird: »Wenn du deine Opfergabe zum Altar bringst und dir dabei einfällt, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich hat, so laß deine Gabe dort vor dem Altar liegen; geh und versöhne dich zuerst mit deinem Bruder, dann komm und opfere deine Gabe« (Mt 5,23-24).

The sign of peace — in the Roman Rite significantly placed before Eucharistic communion — is a particularly expressive gesture which the faithful are invited to make as a manifestation of the People of God's acceptance of all that has been accomplished in the celebration(74) and of the commitment to mutual love which is made in sharing the one bread, with the demanding words of Christ in mind: "If you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift" (Mt 5:23-24).
