The insular isolation, of some of the Sunda Islands where it lives, has rendered different the various populations, so much to recognize 4 subspecies: Babyrousa babyrussa celebensis is the biggest subspecies and is endemic to Celebes Island (northern Sulawesi); Babyrousa babyrussa frosti is, on the contrary, the smallest subspecies and is endemic to the islands Sanana and Taliabu (Sula Archipelago).

L’isolamento insulare, su alcune delle isole della Sonda dove vive, ha reso differenti le varie popolazioni tanto da riconoscere 4 sottospecie: Babyrousa babyrussa celebensis è la sottospecie di maggiori dimensioni ed è endemica dell’isola di Celebes (Sulawesi del nord); Babyrousa babyrussa frosti è invece la sottospecie di minori dimensioni ed è endemica delle isole Sanana e Taliabu (arcipelago di Sula).
