Als Ersatz für die schlichte vierstimmige Harmonisierung von Luthers Choral, mit der er seine Kantate 1723 und auch 1730 eingeleitet hatte, schuf Bach in seinem letzten Lebensjahrzehnt nun einen gewaltigen, kunstvoll ausgearbeiteten kontrapunktischen Eröffnungssatz von 228 Takten Länge.
