One of the most important physicians dedicated to the study of phthisiology was René Laennec, who died from the disease at the age of 45, after contracting tuberculosis while studying contagious patients and infected bodies.[71] Laennec invented the stethoscope[57] which he used to corroborate his auscultatory findings and prove the correspondence between the pulmonary lesions found on the lungs of autopsied tuberculosis patients and the respiratory symptoms seen in living patients.

Una de las figuras médicas más importantes de este siglo dedicadas al estudio de la tisiología es René Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec, que moriría de tuberculosis a los 45 años, contraída en el contexto de sus estudios con pacientes y cadáveres infectados; diseñó el estetoscopio y se afanó por corroborar que sus hallazgos auscultatorios se correspondían con lesiones pulmonares realizando observaciones comparativas entre los hallazgos en vida y la disección posterior de los pacientes tras el fallecimiento (se le considera por ello precursor del método anátomo-clínico).
