মন্ত্রের প্রারম্ভে এবং শেষে নিয়ম মাফিক কিছু শব্দ ব্যবহার করতে হয়, যার মধ্যে অপরিহার্য একটি শব্দ হচ্ছে 'ওম্'। এছাড়া তান্ত্রিক মন্ত্রে কতিপয় অর্থহীন ধ্বনিও ব্যবহূত হয় যেগুলি 'বীজ' বা 'বীজমন্ত্র' নামে পরিচিত।
