দেবের পূর্বপুরুষ ছিলেন ভারতের গুজরাটের বাসিন্দা এবং কুলীন। রাজনৈতিক, অর্থনৈতিক, সামাজিক ও ধর্মীয় উত্থানপতনের কারণে তাঁর জনৈক পূর্বপুরুষ পঞ্চম শতকে গুজরাটের আদিনিবাস ত্যাগ করে সিলেটে চলে আসেন এবং এখানেই স্থায়িভাবে বসবাস শুরু করেন।

The family tradition goes that Dev's ancestors were high caste Brahmins who had fled the political, economic, social and religious turmoil in their native Gujrat and settled down in Sylhet in the 5th century.
