The metate is composed of two elements, the rectangular plate to grind usually called metate and a cylindrical part, also of stone, with smaller diameter ends to safely grab known as metlapilli hand metate or “son of metate” (as the translation of the Nahuatl word into Spanish), which is used against the metate to grind grain or other item by pushing the two to break the grain.

El metate se compone de dos elementos, la plancha rectangular para moler llamada normalmente metate y otra pieza cilíndrica, también de piedra, con extremos de menor diámetro para poder asir con seguridad conocido como metlapilli, mano de metate o “hijo del metate” (según la traducción de dicha palabra náhuatl al español), el cual se usa contra el metate para moler los granos u otro elemento presionándolos entre ambos para romper el grano.
