The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), initiated, with further support from the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), and the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) of Belgium, an international workshop in Brussels in November 1983 to explore the possibility and modus operandi of a world microbial strain data network.
