Up until the reference year 2013, the direct investment statistical series have been in coherence with the Foreign Direct Investments under the Balance of Payments (transactions and income) and the International Investment Position (positions), in the sense that the Directional Principle has been the basis for the compilation of all foreign direct investment figures.

Frem til referanseåret 2013 har direkteinvesteringene i stor grad harmonisert med direkteinvesteringene i statistikkene Utenriksregnskapet (transaksjoner og avkastning) og Fordringer og gjeld overfor utlandet (beholdninger), i den forstand at samme prinsipp og metoder er lagt til grunn for utarbeiding av direkteinvesteringene.
