For, whereas Our lot has been cast in an age that is bitterly hostile to justice and truth, we have not failed, as you have been reminded by the Apostolic letter which we recently addressed to you, to do what in us lay, by Our instructions and admonitions, and by such practical measures as seemed best suited for their purpose, to dissipate the contagion of error in its many shapes, and to strengthen the sinews of the Christian life.

Abbiamo cercato fino ad oggi di fare questo, col suo divino aiuto, e Ci studieremo di continuare a farlo, fino alla fine della Nostra vita, Costretti a vivere in tempi assai avversi alla verità e alla giustizia, per quanto dipendeva da Noi, con gli insegnamenti, con le ammonizioni, con gli atti, come ne fa fede anche l’ultima lettera apostolica a voi indirizzata, non abbiamo mai tralasciato nulla di quello che poteva servire meglio sia a dissipare il molteplice contagio degli errori, sia a rinvigorire la pratica della vita cristiana.
