“Back in 2008, the spike in food prices led to an increase in poverty rates in Thailand for the first time since 1997. This suggests that higher food prices hurt the poorest in society even though many farmers may benefit,” Mr. Gil Sander said. “If oil prices continue to increase to new highs, even those farmers who can sell their crops at higher prices may see the income gains reversed since they will face both a higher cost of living but also higher costs of key inputs like fertilizer.”

“การที่ราคาอาหารถีบตัวสูงขึ้นเป็นประวัติการณ์เมื่อปี 2551 ส่งผลให้อัตราความยากจนของไทยในปีดังกล่าวเพิ่มขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกนับตั้งแต่วิกฤติเศรษฐกิจต้มยํากุ้งเมื่อปี 2540 เป็นต้นมา นี่แสดงให้เห็นว่าถึงแม้ชาวไร่ชาวนาจะได้ประโยชน์จากราคาอาหารที่เพิ่มขึ้น แต่ภาวะดังกล่าวจะทําร้ายประชากรที่ยากจนที่สุดของประเทศ” นายเฟรดเดริโก้กล่าว “ถ้าราคาน้ํามันยังพุ่งสูงขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ แม้แต่ชาวนาเองก็จะได้รับความเดือดร้อนจากการขึ้นราคาของสินค้าต่าง ๆ ตามราคาน้ํามัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นปุ๋ยหรือสินค้าเพื่อการอุปโภคบริโภคอื่น ๆ”
