Francés Le After tracing the first records of the word “decadence” in the literature and checking the different uses that were given to it in the West, we intend to describe and understand the semantic changes that were introduced during the 19th century and that made Decadence become an interpretive category, easily used by philosophy, history, science and literature.

Luego de hacer un rastreo de los primeros registros en la literatura de la palabra “decadencia” y de revisar los diferentes usos que a esta se le dio en Occidente, nos proponemos describir y comprender los cambios que a nivel semántico se introdujeron durante el siglo XIX y que Verlaine, Joris-Karl Huysmans y Anatole Baju, va a designar un polémico movimiento estético que quiere corromper el lenguaje y deformar al lector.
