The European Co-ordinator for the high-speed rail axis of south-west Europe, Mr Etienne Davignon, highlighted the importance of the Basque Y to solve the problem of rail gauge incompatibility between both sides of the Pyrenees. "If we ́ve a very good network at our disposal, but we must change the cars, the rail tracks and so on, we won ́t reach the economical aim", Mr Davignon said.

El Coordinador europeo para el eje de Alta Velocidad del Sudoeste de Europa, Etienne Davignon, ha subrayado la importancia de la Y Vasca como solución al problema de la incompatibilidad de ancho de vía entre ambos lados de los Pirineos: "Si contamos con una muy buena red pero tenemos que cambiar los vagones, las vías, etc, no se alcanzará el objetivo económico".
