According to official estimates by the Bank of Guatemala, the country has the highest gross domestic product (GDP) in Central America, amounting to US$ 15,630.1 million in 1996, with an annual per capita income of US$ 1,200, as reported in the study, “Guatemala, public social expenditure and its efficiency”, carried out by the Secretariat-General of the National Economic Planning Council (SEGEPLAN) as part of the “Ruta Social” project (1996).

Según las estimaciones oficiales del Banco de Guatemala, el país presenta el mayor Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) de Centroamérica, el cual ascendía a 15.630,1 millones de dólares de los EE.UU. en 1996, con un ingreso per cápita anual de 1.200 de acuerdo al estudio "Guatemala, el gasto social público y su eficiencia" realizado por la Secretaría General del Consejo Nacional de Planificación Económica (SEGEPLAN) en el marco del Proyecto Ruta Social (1996).
