Ang Faust ng mga naunang libro—kasama na ang mga balad, drama, pelikula, at palabas na gumagamit ng papet, ay tuluyang sinusumpa dahil mas pinili niya ang makamundong kaalaman kaysa sa karunungan mula sa Diyos; "iniwan niya ang Bibliya sa likuran ng pinto at sa ilalim ng bangko, itinatanging tawagan siyang doktor ng Teolohiya, pero nais siyang bansagang isang doktor ng medisina".
