Τα εθνωνύμια χωρίζονται σε δύο κατηγορίες, τα εξωνύμια ή εξώνυμα (το όνομα της εθνοτικής ομάδας έχει δημιουργηθεί από άλλη ομάδα ανθρώπων) και αυτωνύμια ή αυτώνυμα και ενδώνυμα (αυτοπροσδιορισμοί που δημιουργούνται και χρησιμοποιούνται από την ίδια την εθνική ομάδα).

Ethnonyms can be divided into two categories: exonyms (where the name of the ethnic group has been created by another group of people) and autonyms or endonyms (self-designation; where the name is created and used by the ethnic group itself).
