A sacred place for Kannon (Guanyin or the Goddess of Mercy) since the Nara Period (710 to 794), Ishiyama-dera Temple attained a high status with connections to the imperial court and nobility in the Heian Period (794 to 1185) when religious belief in Kannon flourished, and many of the common people also came to revere her.
