Vor dreißig Jahren habe ich ein Buch mit dem Titel The Expanding Circle geschrieben, in dem ich behaupte, dass sich der Kreis der Lebewesen erweitert hat, denen wir moralische Berücksichtigung zuteilwerden lassen. Zunächst von der Sippe auf die Nation, dann auf die Rasse oder ethnische Gruppe, anschließend auf alle Menschen und zuletzt auf nicht-menschliche Tiere.

Thirty years ago, I wrote a book called The Expanding Circle, in which I asserted that, historically, the circle of beings to whom we extend moral consideration has widened, first from the tribe to the nation, then to the race or ethnic group, then to all human beings, and, finally, to non-human animals.

Hace treinta años escribí un libro titulado The Expanding Circle (“El círculo en expansión”), en el que afirmé que, históricamente, el círculo de seres a los que aplicamos la consideración moral se ha ampliado, primero de la tribu a la nación, después a la raza o al grupo étnico, luego a todos los seres humanos y, por último, a todos los animales no humanos.

Il y a trente ans, j’ai écrit un ouvrage intitulé The Expanding Circle, dans lequel j’affirmais qu’au plan historique, le cercle de créatures envers lesquelles nous faisions preuve de considération morale allait s’élargissant, de la tribu à la nation, ensuite à la race ou au groupe ethnique, puis à tous les êtres humains et enfin, aux animaux non humains.
