SIMBAD fu creato unendo il Catalog of Stellar Identifications (CSI) e il Bibliographic Star Index come esistevano al centro di calcolo di Meudon fino al 1979, e poi fu esteso aggiungendo dati da altri cataloghi e articoli accademici.
