One possibility of explaining the evolution of fashions and people's preferences concerning the products and services that they buy, is to use the sociological theory of Pierre Bourdieu, presented mainly in the book Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste (1979), in which he connects a person's aesthetic judgements to his or her position in social space.
