This bird, belonging to the order of the Psittaciformes, family of the Psittacidae and genus Ara, can often be mistaken, by the inexperienced, with the Ara macao (commonly called Yellow-red-blue Macaw, or Scarlet Macaw), seen the presence of at least two of these colours, the blue and the red (the yellow in minor extent, replaced by the saurian-green), which can be misleading. Actually, the Ara chloropterus, called in Italian Ara dalle ali Verdi or Ara rosso e verde; in English Green-Winged Macaw or Red and Green Macaw; and in French Ara Chloroptère, is a similar, but different species.

Questo uccello appartenente all’ordine degli Psittaciformes, famiglia degli Psittacidae e genere Ara, può venir spesso scambiato, dai non esperti, con l’ Ara macao (chiamata comunemente Ara giallo-rosso-blu o Ara scarlatta) data la presenza di almeno 2 di questi colori, il blu e il rosso (molto meno il giallo, sostituito dal verde sauro) che dimensioni e peso, tanto che gli zoologi biologi le hanno dato il soprannome di “gigante buono”, con riferimento anche al carattere docile, che ne fa, tra tutte le specie del genere Ara, quella preferita come animale da compagnia.
