The metropolitan area of Barcelona, included in the urban region of Barcelona, has inhabitants (2011), making it the sixth largest city in the European Union.6 7 It is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, some 120 km to the south of the mountain range of the Pyrenees and the border with France, on a small coastal plain limited by the sea to the east, the Sierra de Collserola to the west, the Llobregat river to the south and the Besós river to the north. Because it was the capital of the county of Barcelona, it is often referred to as the antonomastic name of Ciudad Condal.
