The counter-revolutionary process was reflected in the Third International with the imposition of the necessity to defend the Russian state on its constituent parties and at the same time the retreat of those parties back towards social democratic strategy and tactics. This process of degeneration was followed by Trotsky and his followers during the Thirties Trotsky’s policy of entryism into social democratic and labour parties (the so-called “French turn”), and Trotskyism’s support for the USSR’s imperialist ambitions wiped out Trotskyism as a potentially revolutionary current.
