It was founded in 1822 from the joining into a single institution of the teachings from different centers, including the Royal Studies Center of San Isidro and the Royal Museum of Natural Sciences of Madrid, which a few years later would be joined by the University of Alcalá, the San Carlos College of Surgery and the San Fernando College of Pharmacy.

Fue fundada en 1822 a partir de la reunión en una única institución de las enseñanzas impartidas en distintos centros, entre ellos los Reales Estudios de San Isidro y el Real Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid, a los que unos años más tarde se sumarían la Universidad de Alcalá, el Colegio de Cirugía de San Carlos y el Colegio de Farmacia de San Fernando.
