The Sea of Japan was a landlocked sea when the land bridge of East Asia existed. The onset of formation of the Japan Arc was in the Early Miocene. The Early Miocene period also corresponds to the Japan Sea starting to open, and the northern and southern parts of the Japanese archipelago separating from each other.

ทะเลญี่ปุ่นเคยถูกล้อมรอบด้วยแผ่นดินในยุคสมัยที่ยังคงมีสะพานแผ่นดินในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออก โดยหมู่เกาะญี่ปุ่นเริ่มก่อตัวขึ้นจากการแยกตัวของพื้นที่ทางตอนเหนือและใต้ในสมัยไมโอซีนตอนต้น ซึ่งทําให้ทะเลญี่ปุ่นเริ่มเชื่อมต่อกับทะเลเปิด พื้นที่ทางตอนเหนือของหมู่เกาะยังคงแยกแตกกระจายกันจนกระทั่งเกิดกลุ่มเกาะทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือในสมัยไมโอซีนตอนปลาย
