In a review by the North American Vexillological Association of 150 American city flags, the Chicago city flag was ranked second best with a rating of 9.03 out of 10, behind only the flag of Washington, D.C. The three white background areas of the flag represent, from top to bottom, the North, West, and South sides of the city.

En una revisión de 150 banderas municipales llevada a cabo por la Asociación Vexilológica Norteamericana, la bandera de Chicago quedó en segundo puesto con una nota de 9.03 sobre 10, superada sólo por la bandera del Distrito de Columbia. Las tres barras blancas de la bandera representan, de arriba a abajo, los lados norte, oeste y sur de la ciudad.
