The most obvious biogeographical example is the Alps, but many other Natura 2000 upland sites have been proposed: a "continental" system (e.g. the French Massif Central), a "Mediterranean" system (e.g. the Pindus mountains in Greece or the Italian Apennines), a "Moroccan-type" system (Gibraltar) and an "Atlantic" system (e.g. the Cantabrian mountains in Spain).
