প্রাচীন গুজরাটি নামে পরিচিতি থাকলেও কোন কোন বিশেষজ্ঞ এই ভাষাটিকে প্রাচীন পশ্চিম রাজস্থানি হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করতে পছন্দ এই যুক্তি দেখিয়ে যে সেই সময় গুজরাটি এবং রাজস্থানি স্বতন্ত্র ভাষা হিসাবে উদ্ভূত হয়নি।
