8] From that same teaching we learn prudence of the spirit, and thereby we avoid prudence of the flesh; we learn justice, by which we give to every man his due; fortitude, which prepares us to endure all things and with steadfast heart suffer all things for the sake of God and eternal happiness; and, last of all, temperance through which we cherish even poverty borne out of love for God, nay, we even glory in the cross itself, unmindful of its shame.

La même Doctrine nous enseigne la prudence de l’esprit, qui nous met en garde contre la prudence de la chair; la justice, qui nous fait accorder à chacun son droit; la force, qui nous dispose à tout souffrir, le cœur haut, pour Dieu et pour l’éternelle béatitude; enfin la tempérance, qui nous porte à chérir même la pauvreté, pour le Royaume de Dieu, et à nous glorifier jusque dans la croix, sans souci de l’humiliation.

Dalla stessa dottrina apprendiamo la prudenza dello spirito, per cui fuggiamo la prudenza della carne: la giustizia, per cui rendiamo il suo diritto ad ognuno; la fortezza che ci fa pronti a patir tutto, e colla quale, con animo generoso, patiamo di fatto ogni cosa per Iddio e per l'eterna felicità; e finalmente la temperanza, con cui giungiamo ad amare financo la povertà, ci gloriamo anzi della croce, non curando il disprezzo.
