A korábban elnagyolt, perifériálisnak tekintett, lényegében Sárosi által megkezdett hangszeres népzenekutatás az ezredfordulóra a magyar népzenetudomány fontos, dinamikusan fejlődő területévé vált, és az 1950-es évek végétől összegyűjtött nagyszámú adat, az elvégzett kutatások alapján Kodály fentebb idézett állításai csak részigazságnak bizonyultak.
