Seguidamente se introducen los conceptos de alergia, atopia, alérgeno y otros, y se describe la secuencia de acontecimientos que tienen lugar durante el desarrollo de la respuesta alérgica mediada por IgE y el papel desempeñado por las células implicadas: células dendríticas, linfocitos T y B, mastocitos, basófilos, eosinófilos y células T reguladoras, así como de los factores solubles liberados por estas células y que intervienen en su desarrollo.
