As we have seen some months earlier, the Soviet apparatus did not only limit itself to purely societal and economic concerns; artists were to be watched closely and carefully for any dissident behavior: Shostakovich was repeatedly victim of the assaults by the Stalinist intelligentsia, as well as his fellows Aram Khachaturian, Sergei Prokofiev or Nikolai Myaskovsky.
