Both fish belong to the Scombridae family, but tunas are the Thunnus gennus and bonito the Sarda genus. The reason why we've always tended to think they were both the same fish it's because the renowned "bonito del norte" (in english Albacore but in spanish means "northern bonito") it's really a tipe of tuna called Thunnus alalunga.
