মধুসূদনের মতো বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রও তাঁর উপন্যাসের জন্য ভারতীয় প্রসঙ্গ গ্রহণ করেন. তবে ভারতীয় পুরাকাহিনীগুলি তাঁকে যতটা না উদ্বুদ্ধ করেছে, তার চেয়ে বেশি করেছে বর্তমান ও নিকট অতীতের বাংলা ও তার মানুষের প্রকৃতি ও বাস্তব অবস্থা।

Though neither of these two English books nor his earlier Bangla attempts drew the attention of readers, his English reading, particularly of Walter Scott's romances, helped to inspire, and also occasionally to structure, the subsequent novels which brought him fame.
