Zum Beispiel war ich der Meinung, die Chinesen würden nie lachen und seien ein stures Volk, aber ich stellte fest, daß sie schon beim geringsten Anlaß zum Lachen bereit waren, und zwar oft im unpassendsten Moment, so zum Beispiel, wenn jemand bei einem Autounglück getötet wurde. In einen solchen Falle schreien sie: „Sudah mati“ („Er ist tot“), und brechen in schallendes Gelächter aus.
