Mit einer kommunikationstheoretisch abgefederten Konsenssuche sollte das aber keinesfalls verwechselt werden: Fowles erzählt seine Entführungsgeschichte aus der Perspektive des Täters und des Opfers nicht um zu zeigen, dass sich ihre Weltbilder widersprechen und die Wahrheit in der Mitte liegt (dort liegt sie nie), sondern dass beide – sowohl der verklemmte Schmetterlingssammler als auch die gut erzogene Kunststudentin – jenseits der Wahrheit leben, weil sie den Einzelzellen ihrer ideologischen Erziehung nicht entkommen können.

On no account, however, should this be confused with a search, theoretically cushioned by communication theory, for consensus: Fowles tells his abduction story from the perspective of perpetrator and victim not to show that their world views contradict each other and that the truth lies in between (it never does), but rather that both – the inhibited butterfly collector as well as the well-mannered art student – live beyond the truth, because both are unable to escape the isolation chambers of their ideological education.
