General Baril has served since 1961, joining the Airborne Regiment when it was formed in 1968; completing the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff course in 1975; graduating from the École Supérieure de Guerre in Paris in 1977; subsequently serving as a company commander with the 1st Battalion R22eR in Lahr, Germany, and as a deputy commanding officer with the 3rd Battalion in Cyprus.

Le général Baril est en service depuis 1961, ayant joint le Régiment aéroporté au moment de sa création en 1968. Il termine le cours de commandement et d'état-major de la Force terrestre canadienne en 1976, obtient son diplôme de l'École supérieure de Guerre de Paris en 1977, puis occupe le poste de commandant de compagnie au sein du 1er Bataillon du R22eR à Lahr, en Allemagne, et celui de commandant adjoint du 3e Bataillon à Chypre.
