In 1814 Mequinenza was recovered for the Spaniards by troops of General Copons thanks to an audacious stratagem due to the Spanish military and adventurer of flamenco origin Juan Van Halen, then lieutenant general, that by the same means obtained the taking of Lérida and the castle of Monzón.
