“Works of sculpture,” writes Gross, are “solid wishes, or vehicles of a wish for things that are solid.” [21] It seems fitting, then, that some of the works in which Lawler most astutely exposes the art institution’s fantasy life are a group of photographs, taken in the late 1970s and early 1980s, that depict figural sculpture, and, in particular, classical and neoclassical statues, in museum settings.
