The following steps are employed in cyclically regenerating polycarboxylic acid cation exchange resins: (a) utilizing a charged or alkali metal salt of polycarboxylate acid cation resin to soften water; (b) regenerating the spent resin in one step with an active regenerant of the $g(a)-hydroxy carboxylic acids or o-hydroxy benzoic acids to produce spent regenerant; (c) precipitating the polyvalent hard ions in the spent regenerant with sodium or potassium carbonate to reform the active regenerant; (d) separating the precipitate; and (e) concentrating the dilute active regenerate solution to its approximate initial concentration and recovering of water for process rinses.

Les étapes suivantes de régénération cyclique de résines échangeuses de cations d'acide carboxylique consistent à: (a) utiliser un sel chargé ou un sel de métal alcalin de résine cationique d'acide de polycarboxylate pour adoucir l'eau; (b) régénérer la résine épuisée en une étape avec un régénérant actif d'acides $g(a)-hydroxy carboxyliques ou d'acides o-hydroxy benzoïques afin d'obtenir un régénérant épuisé; (c) précipiter les ions durs polyvalents dans le régénérant épuisé avec du carbonate de sodium ou de potassium afin de reformer le régénérant actif; (d) séparer le précipité; et (e) concentrer la solution régénérée active diluée, à sa concentration initiale approximative et récupérer l'eau pour effectuer des rinçages.
