Several delegations emphasized the various road safety issues that required special attention, including: (a) the importance of high-level political commitment; (b) road safety goals and targets and associated action plans; (c) the designation of a lead agency; (d) safe road infrastructure; (e) road safety audits; (f) black spot programmes; (g) vehicle inspection regimes; (h) best practices in separation of different types of traffic; (i) public-private partnerships; (j) changing road-user behaviour; (k) enforcement and special traffic police units; (l) safety technology; (m) helmets; (n) seatbelts; (o) speeding; (p) drinking and driving; (q) hospitals and trauma care centres; (r) awareness campaigns and education; and (s) safety measures in rural areas and in residential areas.
