Las ventajas relativas que ofrece el medio natural para el desarrollo de estas actividades contrastan con la susceptibilidad al deterioro de los suelos y con la gran vulnerabilidad de los ecosistemas alto andinos sujetos a condiciones climáticas extremas, fuerte humedad y altas pendientes. La aplicación indiscriminada de agroquímicos en la labor agrícola, y la ampliación de frontera agropecuaria son actividades que han ocasionado afectación sobre este ecosistema, impactando los recursos naturales y la biodiversidad del páramo, así como la población que se abastece de las fuentes hídricas allí existentes.
