Cheddi Berret (Bharat) Jagan was born on 22 March 1918 in Port Mourant, a rural village in the county of Berbice (now part of modern-day Guyana), the eldest of 11 children born to parents of the Kurmi caste who came from the present-day state of Uttar Pradesh in the then British India to British Guiana as indentured labourers.
