In addition to provisions in the UK-wide Crime and Disorder Act # relating to sex offender orders, the Act contains a provision permitting a court sentencing an offender for a sexual or violent offence to impose an extended period of supervision following their release from prison if the normal supervision period would not be adequate for the purpose of preventing the commission of further offences and securing the offender's rehabilitation (in the case of sex offenders, the normal period of supervision can be extended by up to ten years
