The artisans had some real knowledge, but they had also a conceit that they knew things which were beyond them.At last I went to the artisans, for I was conscious that I knew nothing at all, as I may say, and I was sure that they knew many fine things; and here I was not mistaken, for they did know many things of which I was ignorant, and in this they certainly were wiser than I was. But I observed that even the good artisans fell into the same error as the poets;—because they were good workmen they thought that they also knew all sorts of high matters, and this defect in them overshadowed their wisdom; and therefore I asked myself on behalf of the oracle, whether I would like to be as I was, neither having their knowledge nor their ignorance, or like them in both; and I made answer to myself and to the oracle that I was better off as I was.

Ten slotte nu ging ik tot de handwerkslieden; want ik wist dat ik niets kende, in één woord, doch hen, dat wist ik, zou ik in vele en schoone dingen kundig bevinden. En daarin bedroog ik mij niet, maar zij wisten wat ik niet wist, en daarin waren zij wijzer dan ik. Maar, o mannen Atheners, zij hadden alweer hetzelfde gebrek als ook de dichters, naar mij docht, en zelfs ook de goede werklieden: daar zij hun vak met bekwaamheid uitoefenen, meende een ieder ook verder in de grootste dingen de wijsste te zijn, en deze dwaling verborg die andere wijsheid, zoodat ik mij zelf afvroeg voor het orakel, of ik zou kiezen te zijn, zooals ik was, noch wijs in hun wijsheid, noch onwetend in hun onwetendheid, of beide dingen, die genen hadden, ook zelf te hebben.
