وحيث أن المدرس يعد بمثابة وسيط تعليمي فهو يتوقع منه النظر في السبل التي يؤثر فيها العرق والطبقة ونوع الجنس واللغة والاختلافات الجغرافية على التعلم وعلى تطبيع تلك الحقائق مع استراتيجياته التعليمية والتدريس بطريقة تعترف وتحترم الاختلافات الثقافية والاجتماعية واللغوية، فضلا عن المستويات المتباينة لقدرات التعلم وعلى إظهار الالتزام المهني والعطوف بالأطفال كأشخاص كاملين.

As educational mediators, teachers were expected to reflect on the ways in which race, class, gender, language, and geographical differences affected learning, and to adapt those realities to their teaching strategies; to teach in a manner which acknowledged and respected sociocultural and linguistic differences, as well as varying levels of learning ability; and to demonstrate a professional and caring commitment to children as whole persons.
