Natural vegetation ranges from the mixed forests of the Appalachians to the grasslands of the Great Plains, from the conifers of the Rocky Mountains to the redwood forests of California, the cacti and mesquite of the south‐western deserts and the subtropical pines, oaks, palms, and mangroves of the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts.
