A needle is used directly on the cotton or silk tulle and the method was already popular from the beginning of the 19th century, thanks to the British Heathcoat and Lurdley who, in 1809, perfected a loom to manufacture tulle, a fine and lightweight yet very strong fabric characterised by its bobbinet structure.

Si tratta di un ricamo ad ago eseguito direttamente su tulle in cotone o in seta che si diffuse già a partire dai primi decenni del XIX secolo grazie al perfezionamento, ad opera degli inglesi Heathcoat e Lurdley nel 1809, di un telaio per produrre meccanicamente il tulle, un tessuto molto leggero, vaporoso ma al tempo stesso resistente, caratterizzato da maglie a fori esagonali.
